BOULDER — Adam Trunko started his journey with the Colorado Buffaloes Division I club ice hockey team in 2018. 108 games later his career with the Buffs is nearing its end, but it is no question how dedicated he is about his time in Boulder.
“It’s definitely been a long time, but it goes by in a flash,” Trunko continued. “It’s been an amazing six [years]. Coming back, it shows how much this means to me. How much this group of guys means to me.”
Trunko captained the Buffaloes team in the 2021-22 season and is an alternate captain this season. But it wasn’t always that way. When he first got to Boulder, now head coach Trace Jablin, was in his senior year at CU and over the years has seen Trunko grow as a player and a leader.
“He’s obviously a huge leader on this team now,” Jablin said about Trunko. “And just seeing how far he’s come as a player, he’s a gamer. He plays a full 200-foot game. Before his freshman year, I don’t know if I would have been saying that so much.”
After scoring a beautiful goal in Saturday night's showdown versus the Arizona State Sun Devils, Trunko reached 70 career points in his playing time with Colorado. Only 12 points behind his former teammate and now coach, Jablin. But with six regular season games left, bragging rights is not what is on Trunko’s mind. What is, is a trip to nationals. One last thing Trunko has the chance to accomplish before his Colorado Buffaloes playing career comes to a close.
“Words couldn’t describe how much it would mean for this group of guys, and for me especially having such a long career,” Trunko said. “That would be an amazing cap on a career.”
With a sweep of the Sun Devils over the weekend, the chance of the trip to Trunko’s hometown St. Louis for nationals in March stays alive.
But no matter what happens, it has been an incredible career for Adam Trunko with the University of Colorado hockey team.
“Being able to suit up and put on the crest every day and wear a letter for these guys is just something that you don’t want to end. So being able to do it 100 times [and] be able to grow throughout my career, honestly, it’s been an honor,” Trunko concluded. “I’ll walk out of here being able to say that I’ve loved my time and I think I’ve gotten the most out of it.”
