Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver LaJohntay Wester was rewarded with the No. 1 jersey by head coach Deion Sanders following Colorado’s 34-23 win against Cincinnati. He previously wore No. 10.
"He wanted the No. 1 when he came here," Sanders said. "No. 1 ain't something you acquire, it's given to you... He earned it."
The senior recorded five catches for 56 yards against the Bearcats in what was his last game wearing No. 10.
The Florida Atlantic transfer has been a huge part of the Buffaloes' offense this season. Wester has recorded 39 catches for 501 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on the season. He is second on the team in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns this season behind the current Heisman frontrunner, Travis Hunter.
Wester will wear No. 1 for the remainder of the season. On Sanders’ team, the No. 1 is more than just a number. It is always earned and never given. It is an image of earned respect and responsibility. Wester being given the No. 1 confirms his status as both a playmaker and a leader on the team and a key part of Coach Prime’s football team at Colorado.
Wester and the Buffs are on a bye this week. The Buffs will return to the field on Saturday, November 9, in Lubbock, Texas, as the No. 23 Colorado Buffaloes (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) face the Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-3, 3-2 Big 12). The time and TV schedule for this game is still to be determined.
This game will be the first time Wester will be in action with his new number.
