Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter is making a clear case for the Heisman trophy.
After a great performance against UCF on offense and defense, Hunter is at the top of many people’s Heisman boards.
The Heisman Trophy has been an award given out since 1935 to the top player in college football and is considered the most prestigious trophy a player can earn. The last Buffalo to win the award was running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994. Salaam rushed for 2,055 yards and 24 touchdowns that season, with an average of 7.61 yards per carry, leading the Buffs to a 10-1 regular season and a No. 4 ranking in the country. Hunter would be the second Colorado Buffalo to win the award.
Against UCF, Hunter recorded a big game in his team’s 48-21 win. On offense, Hunter recorded nine receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he put up two tackles and an incredible interception.
Across the entire season, Hunter has been putting up huge numbers. He has recorded 46 receptions for 561 yards and six touchdowns. While on defense, he’s recorded two interceptions and 16 tackles only through the five games. Hunter has already recorded half of the number of tackles that he totaled all of last year as he only had 31 tackles last year. He has made his case for the award and is one of the best players in all of college football, as he ranks fifth in receiving yards in the nation and second in the Big 12 conference while top five in other categories.
Hunter has been a playmaker on both sides of the ball, playing 620 snaps this season.
“I would’ve robbed him of that greatness he has,” head coach Deion Sanders said about playing Hunter at only one position. “Imagine if I was selfish, just played him on one side of the ball, we wouldn’t see half of the plays we been blessed with.”
With Hunter continuing to be a two-way player for the Buffaloes, the college football world should be able to see more great plays out of him as he continues his campaign for the Heisman trophy.
Travis may lead the Heisman race after Week 5, however, there is still a ton of football to be played.
In Week 6, the Colorado Buffaloes don’t have a game. They get to rest up for next week as they face off against No. 20 Kansas State at Folsom Field where Hunter will look to continue his Heisman-caliber play. The game will be aired on ESPN at 8:15 p.m. MT.
