After an outstanding final season in the Pac-12 with the Colorado Buffaloes, guard Frida Formann and the Buffs look forward to the transition to the Big 12 conference with the start of the 2024-25 season.
Last season, the Buffs had their season cut short with the loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Sweet 16.
The fifth-year senior is the only starter returning from the 2023-24 Buffs’ starting lineup. With key players like Jaylyn Sherrod and Quay Miller graduating, Formann comes back from a memorable season after she surpassed a record-breaking number of 260 career three-pointers made. Formann will continue to play at her highest level and add to her 3-point total but also step in as the most experienced leader of the squad.
With a squad full of new transfers and freshmen, Formann has gained a new position replacing Sherrod as the head of the Buffs this season. Formann is looking forward to taking this new role and knows to be patient as this isn’t the same team from last season.
“I really want to guide them,” Formann said, “giving them feedback because I’ve been in their shoes before.”
Taking this team to the next level is very important to Formann but she still wants to set goals for herself this season. As a fifth-year senior, Formann had to make a decision in terms of whether she wanted to return back to the Buffs for one last season. Last season she averaged 12.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
Playing with Sherrod for the last four years helped prepare Formann for the new role she will be taking on this upcoming season. Formann realizes this will be the last ride for her at Colorado, so she wants to be able to cherish her last moments, not have too much pressure on the game and be better prepared for her professional career.
“I want to grow as a leader and a scorer and have a great impact offensively and defensively,” Formann said.”... I had more to give to Boulder. Just having one more year felt like it could help me grow in a lot of places such as leadership and playing a different role.”
The guard also spent this past offseason with the Danish national team and received opportunities to play games with Croatia and Greece, where she formed her goal for this year.
“I have really good relationships with all of the Danish players and it’s always nice to hear from them especially since they are professionals,” Formann said. “And I hope to step into that soon.”
Being Danish is very important to Formann too, especially since she is one of the eight players out of 14 on the 2024-25 roster being international.
“It’s really cool to see how many international players we have on our squad because it wasn’t like that when I started here,” Formann said, “and just see how the coaches have opened up to recruiting more internationally and see what that can bring us in terms of experience and different perspectives and style of play.”
Being an international player on the team means something special to Formann as it gives her a sense of being at home.
With many sources to pull from in terms of being a leader, it is Formann’s turn now as she and the Buffs open up their season against the University of Wyoming on Nov. 4.
