Last Saturday, the Colorado Buffaloes took on the Colorado State Rams in the notorious Rocky Mountain Showdown.

The Buffaloes had defeated the Rams in the past 10 straight seasons, and Colorado was looking to bounce back from its loss against the Utah Valley Wolverines and solidify its playoff hopes in the MCLA national tournament.

Colorado State was looking to spoil the party and did just that, winning 8-5.

At the start, Colorado looked like it would be in control and win another showdown title. The Buffaloes scored two goals in the first quarter, and their defense held Colorado State to zero. However, in the second quarter, Colorado State would answer with two goals, tying the game going into the second half.

In the third quarter, momentum shifted towards the Rams. They would go on a five-goal streak and shut down the Buffaloes to zero goals. CU needed to mount a comeback to keep their playoff chances alive. Colorado State would score one more goal, and the Buffaloes would score three goals, but ultimately failed to mount a comeback against Colorado State.

Colorado’s offense struggled the entire way. The Buffaloes’ top scorer, attacker Jacob Roos, was held to only one goal while attempting six shots on goal. Other attackers like Weston Keller, Xander Gardner, and Connor Aschman experienced the same tough defense from Colorado State that limited their scoring.

Ultimately, shots were not going in for the Buffaloes. Colorado State, on the other hand, took 26 shots that resulted in eight goals.

Colorado’s defense struggled mightily to stop Colorado State’s offense in the second half. Senior goalie Dylan Baker had just a 38.5% save rate while Colorado State goalie Charlie Bibaud had an 82.8% save rate.

The Buffs look to bounce back against the BYU Cougars in the RMLC conference tournament next Friday at 10:00 a.m. MT.
