Colorado Buffaloes fall to No. 17 BYU Cougars in four

PROVO, Utah On Thursday night the Colorado Buffaloes (7-5, Big 12 0-0) were faced with the No. 17 ranked BYU Cougars (7-3, Big 12 0-0) on the road. This was the first Big 12 Conference game for either team.


BYU got off to an early start, as they quickly ran up a lead on a 4-0 run. Eventually, the Cougars took the first set with a score of 25-17. 


The Buffs kept their head high and responded in the second set. The Buffs went on multiple runs and were in control for most of the second set. Setter Taylor Simpson recorded a kill and an ace as the Buffs went on a 4-0 run. Later in the set, Colorado went on another 4-0 run as outside hitter Sydney Jordan recorded two kills late in this set as the Buffs won the second set, 25-21.


Colorado led early in the third set, however, BYU went on multiple runs. The Buffaloes had a hitting percentage of .306 in the third set. With the runs that BYU went on, though, the Buffs fell just short in the third set with a score of 25-23.


The fourth set went a similar way to the third set for the Buffs. The Cougars went on a couple runs and the Buffs weren’t able to catch up. BYU won a close fourth set 25-22, and won the close match 3-1.


Elli Mortenson led the Cougars with 11 kills and Alex Bower recorded 40 assists and 12 digs as their performances helped the BYU Cougars improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 Conference as the Colorado Buffaloes fell to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12 Conference.


The Buffs will continue on the road in Utah, as they head to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Utes (11-1, 1-0 Big 12) on ESPN+.
