After short NFL speculation and weeks of anticipation, head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders has put pen to paper on a new contract extension with Colorado.
Breaking the bank, the 54-million-dollar, five-year deal makes Sanders a top-five highest paid coach in the NCAA. It is also the largest contract for a coach in the university’s history and makes Sanders the most well paid coach in the Big 12 conference. After just two seasons with the Buffaloes, the team has locked him up for the foreseeable future.
The contract broken down by year ($10.8 million/year):
2025: $10M
2026: $10M
2027: $11M
2028: $11M
2029: $12M
Coming off a 9-4 record in 2024, CU’s best since 2016, the move appears right for both sides. During the NFL hiring cycle, Sanders' name was mentioned more than once, but the coach apparently had no intentions of heading league-bound yet. Once the open jobs were filled, an extension became imminent.
Since his arrival, Sanders has boosted the program tremendously. An increase in revenue, popularity, social media, player accolades and wins have been beneficial to the culture. With Coach Prime in for the long haul, he will have the full support of the university to elevate the team further.
A new quarterback and recruits have already created anticipation for the 2025 season. Now that the contract has been signed, Sanders provides security and optimism for what’s to come.
