Buffs run in Wyoming, kick off cross country season

CHEYENNE, Wyo. –The Colorado men’s and women’s cross country teams competed on Friday, Aug. 30, in the Wyoming Invitational, a 5k race meant to get the teams ready for their seasons. 


In Cheyenne, the Buffs got to run against in-state opponents Colorado State and Northern Colorado alongside the hosting Wyoming. This marked Sean Carlson’s first competition as CU’s new cross country coach.


As a team, the CU women finished third, placing ahead of Northern Colorado while CSU grabbed the first place spot. In terms of individuals, three runners cracked the top 25. 


Whitney Valenti placed 11th with a time of 18:23.00. Caroline Melhourn, who made her 5k debut as a Buff, wasn’t too far behind, coming in at 13th with a time of 18:37.3. Emma Hadley rounded out the top 25 members from the 23rd spot where she recorded a time of 19:10.6.


Outside of the Buffs’ top three performers, Sierra Parks (19:37.00) and Helen Carlson (20:33.00) came in at 32nd and 44th.


The men’s team, despite also placing behind first-place Wyoming and Colorado State, had more individual success with two top ten placements and two more top 25 placements. 


Charles Robertson placed sixth at the invitational, the highest placement from both CU teams. Robertson clocked in at 15:12.9. Wilson Georges was able to take the 10th spot at the meet with a time of 15:20.7. The other top runners were Conner Wingfield (15:36.7), who placed 20th, and Reese Kilbarger-Stumpf (15:39.3), who placed 21st.


The rest of the men’s team was rounded out by Tyler Scholl, placing 27th with a time of 15:50.9, Conner Wirth (16:29.5), who placed 35th, and Antonio Camacho-Buck (16:32.0), who placed 36th.


The CU cross country teams will attend the Roadrunner Invitational on Sept. 21, hosted by Denver University.
