RENO, Nev. – The University of Colorado men's and women’s cross-country teams competed in Reno on Nov. 15 in the NCAA Mountain Regional, which saw 19 women's and 17 men’s teams compete. This race is the gateway to the NCAA Championship event, happening Nov. 23.
Runners faced cold temperatures during the competition–hovering around 35 degrees–as fresh snow surrounded the course. However, these conditions didn’t hinder the Buffs too much as the men’s team placed fifth and ran well enough to make it to nationals as an at-large bid, while the women placed sixth with a couple of top twenty finishers.

The headline for the women’s team was Jessie Secor, (11th - 20:10.2) the Buffs’ top finisher in Reno. The women’s team is not expected to make the national championship, making Secor eligible to compete as an individual. With that time, she has cemented her spot in the championship.
After commenting on the growth of the women’s team, head coach Sean Carlson also made sure to talk about Abbey Nechanicky (16th - 20:13.7). He pointed out that Nechanicky just barely missed the mark to compete at nationals, and continued to say that she had a “great freshman season.”
The men’s team was led by Isaiah Givens (17th - 29:41.1) who ran a personal best. The men’s team wasn’t able to guarantee a spot in nationals by placing top two, however, the selection committee felt their performance in Reno was enough to justify giving them a spot in the championship race.
The Buffs will get one more chance to run this season at the NCAA Championship on Nov. 23 in Madison, Wisconsin.
