Colorado Buffaloes running back Dylan Edwards will enter the transfer portal, according to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. Following a tumultuous freshman year, which included many peaks and valleys, Edwards is set to find a new home with three years of eligibility left.
The Derby, Kansas native was a four-star recruit out of high school who flipped his commitment from Notre Dame after Deion Sanders was hired as head coach. Edwards rushed for 321 yards on 4.2 yards per carry while also receiving 36 passes for 299 yards, tallying one rushing touchdown and four receiving touchdowns. His longest play of the season was a 75-yard catch-and-run touchdown versus TCU in his debut collegiate game.
Edwards has been touted for his blazing speed, which even got him a spot on Colorado’s track team. In his debut meet, he finished eighth out of 17 in his only race, which was generally applauded given he is not a full-time track runner.
This may not come as a major surprise as former Ohio State running back Dallan Hayden had just recently transferred to Colorado, immediately being a candidate for the RB1 spot that has been projected to go to Edwards all offseason. Hayden rushed for 663 yards and six touchdowns in 2022, before carrying the ball 19 times for 110 yards in only three games last season. As a big-time rusher from a big-time school, it is no surprise he is coming with the expectation of being the black and gold’s potential workhorse.
Colorado also lost running back Sy’veon Wilkerson to the portal. The Chicago native was a part of the Jackson State crew that followed coach Sanders to Colorado. He rushed for 191 yards on 3.6 yards per carry and had three rushing touchdowns in his lone season with the black and gold.
The Buffs running back room still includes the like of Micah Welch, a standout in the spring program that had led many to believe the starting competition was between him and Edwards, but with the addition of Hayden, it now seems Edwards may have felt the room was too crowded.
